This textile is a Senneh Kilim, a highly prized type of flat-woven tapestry rug originating from the historic city of Sanandaj (formerly known as Senneh) in the Kurdistan province of western Iran.
Key Characteristics & Identification Features
- Central Concentric Medallion: The design features a prominent, stepped diamond or concentric hex-shaped central medallion filled with small geometric patterns and repeating floral motifs.
- Intricate Fields: Surrounding the medallion is a contrasting deep indigo or midnight blue field packed tightly with repeating micro-patterns, typically the Boteh (the historic precursor to the paisley pattern) or Herati (fish and flower) motifs.
- Exquisite Flat-Weave Craftsmanship: Senneh kilims are internationally renowned among collectors for their incredibly fine, tight weave. Unlike coarser tribal kilims, they feature very thin profiles, crisp details, and elegant color transitions using naturally dyed wool.
